CIL 2012 Day 3 Session 3: “Bringing Good Things to Life”

Michah May – NYPL (absent)

Hutch Tibbetts – Douglas County Libraries (CO)

1. Collaborating with local school districts

  • partnered with library media centers
  • sending resources into schools – access at schools and home – had a duplication of databases between schools & libraries – partnership with Gale to offer resources (also reduction of cost for resources)
  • 2011: 51% of database use from local schools
  • authentication-free : all school ISPs authenticate as if they were branches

2. eContent

  • VuFind as discovery tool for electronic resources
  • multiple copies goal – increase access to materials

DCPL distribution platform

  1. purchased Adobe content server
  2. many different methods – audio, video, PDF, ePub, etc
  • No usage restrictions on e-materials – Gutenberg, Google books
  • Single usage restrictions – certain publishers
  • Adobe Content Server – ensures that DRM files are deleted after reading

Administration of e-content

  • uploaded to catalog via VuFind
  • apply protection during upload
  • add cover art
Catalog
  • patrons can manage profile & preferences
  • staff can also add reviews
  • save reviews
  • all Overdrive content is included in catalog – one stop shopping
  • all e-content incorporated into catalog – add items to cart, check out, etc
  • eBook checkout online
  • Freegal content – Sony music catalog – offers 3 songs a week – “iTunes for libraries”
  • incorporates Gale content
  • 3M integration – own & can distribute content
  • full text indexing
  • my e-content page
  • Strands recommendation engine (what to read next) – contextual to where you are & what is currently in your account (checked out or on hold)
  • HTML5 online eReader/viewer – works in all browsers, tablets, mobile devices

DCPL eReader app for iOS and Android – read ePub files offline

physical “power walls” –  represent 60-65% of circulation – wanted to do the same thing with eContent so developed

Digital “Power Wall” -large screens that allow browsing of digital content – kiosks that bridge physical & digital power walls & keep them close together – seamless transition from physical to digital collection

  • display only e-content
  • home screen parts : staff picks, highest rated titles, most popular titles, new content (updated every 24 hours)
  • Overdrive integration – don’t have to leave power wall to check out items

Crowdsourcing the content – allow users to augment & “own” content = patrons more invested in library

Social library – Facebook app – can share content from library catalog onto FB

eBook partnerships – both library systems & publishers to offer more to users

Marketing

  • video of digital library & e-content strategy on website

More about crowdsourcing (audience question) – use patron input to decide what electronic material to purchase:

Adobe Content Server makes the library an electronic publisher/distributor – authors can submit materials to the library for trial distribution- if that item is highly rated & frequently downloaded over a 6-12 month review period, library will buy that content – work with Colorado Independent Publishers Association, among others – “try before you buy”

Major Obstacles

  1. seamless integration of technology – not possible, but try to get as close as possible
  2. content – some publishers get it, some don’t – have to keep looking around for those willing to work with you
